I have lived my entire “adult” life in a college dormitory working in both Residence Life and college chaplaincy. I like the term “dormitory” better than “residence hall.” I went to school for a long time so that now I get to swoop around in a fancy robe and silly hat (like at Hogwarts). I have an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts (a place like Hogwarts). I play both the viola and tennis with more heart than skill. I love my current home in Boston but will always be a Pennsylvanian at heart.
Oy. Well, I’ve written seven books, one published, one will be published next year. Before that I was rejected in the high triple digits at pretty much all levels a person can be rejected.
I have an MFA in Writing for Children and Young Adults from Vermont College of Fine Arts. I teach creative writing for Southern New Hampshire University; you’d get all my love and over-educated opinions here for free! I’m relentlessly loyal and stay with my mentee until they get an agent or (ideally) a book deal, even if it takes another book. That’s why I don’t mentor every AMM round. These things can take time.
Publishing is hard. But writing is worth it, you are awesome, and I want to cheer you on.
Funny books with kissing, please.
- Magical Realism/Fabulism
- Own Voices
If anywhere in your book a character says, without irony, “She’s just not like other girls,” then we probably aren’t meant to work together.
I WILL PROVIDE:
- Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
- Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)
- Whatever you want, in the realm of legality.
I will send you my opinions in the form of a letter and many in-text comments. You can do with them what you will. I also ask lots of questions about your world, character motivation, etc. I need to understand a character, even if I don’t like them. We can do multiple rounds. I will help you with your query and query list. I used to query to feel alive.
Jessica Kim; @jesskimwrites *Sniff* You’ll all know her soon.
I like a good subtle love story thrown into a book about mostly other stuff. And funny. Send me the funny books.
DO NOT SEND ME:
Well. I mean. I doubt I could help you with Sci Fi. My knowledge of that peaks with ST:TNG.
