Julie has lived in Silicon Valley, spent many humid summers in Japan, and currently resides in Southern California with her husband and imaginary dog, where she works full-time during the day and spends her nights creating stories about kids going on magical adventures.
I dabbled in writing when I was young and was amazed when my middle school teacher assigned us to write a story. I thought, “Is this even homework?” In high school, I wrote a lot, but I didn’t focus on craft or finishing stories. I didn’t believe I could write as a career. After I started working full-time, I needed an escape and started writing again. Then I couldn’t stop. I wanted to become an author. I wrote and queried a YA Contemporary, but once I realized that my MG Light Fantasy was something that made me truly happy to write, I withdrew those fulls. I began finding some amazing CPs for Magic through CP match-ups. This time, I knew, I needed more rounds of revisions. I dug into world building and the characters. I wrote and re-wrote the query. I submitted my MG Light Fantasy to Author Mentor Match and the wonderful Sean Easley selected me as his mentee. After revising with Sean’s feedback and multiple rounds of CPs, I began querying. I’m so lucky to say that I’m now represented by the magical Sarah Landis of Sterling Lord Literistic!
I was selected for Author Mentor Match in 2017 by Sean Easley, who is an incredibly insightful author and mentor. After querying my manuscript, I was fortunate to receive multiple offers and signed with Sarah Landis at Sterling Lord Literistic, who worked as an editor at major publishing houses for fifteen years. As a former Author Mentor Match mentee, I understand the mentee process, and am committed to working with my future mentee to help them reach their publishing goals. I’ve learned from an amazing mentor, and I’m planning to help my future mentee in the same way.
I want to help my future mentee on their road to publication. My goal is to help my future mentee in the way that my amazing AMM mentor helped me!
My goal is to guide you on how to make your story the story you have always wanted it to be. I’ll help with pacing, worldbuilding, strengthening character motivations, and creating a story that will stay in readers’ minds and hearts. Revisions can be tough, but I’ll be cheering you along too.
I’ve written stories in some shape or other all of my life, but began very seriously considering publication in the past few years. Since then, I’ve spent at least some part of each day learning more about writing, editing, and publishing. I have written across the board: MG fantasy, MG contemporary, MG contemporary fantasy and more, and critiqued manuscripts for everything from thrillers to #ownvoices contemporary fantasies to fun romances. No matter the genre, the core elements of the story like pacing or character arcs are uniform, so I’m open to mentoring across all middle grade genres. I’m looking for a story with a voice I’ll fall in love with and characters that I want to root for even after I finish the last page!
- Magical Realism/Fabulism
- Own Voices
- Urban/Contemporary Fantasy
I love commercial AND literary stories—and stories in-between. Stories that range from… adventure-packed, filled with beautiful worlds, heart-warming, clever characters, and fun.
I WILL PROVIDE:
- Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
- Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)
- Freestyle in chat
I love looking at the overall story: is there something missing in the plot? Is the pacing snappy and engaging to readers? Will readers be left with a feeling of joy and love for your book? To start us off, I’ll provide an edit letter going over big-picture edits. In addition, I’ll provide comments in-line, ranging for anything from smoothening out plot points to amping up characters. If you have questions, I’m available to chat things over or brainstorm. After that, I’m available for working with you to polish your query/synopsis, curate your agent list, and getting you ready to query!
I’m looking for a mentee who is serious about publishing, loves writing (and editing/rewriting) and is ready to roll up their sleeves. To get the best version of your story, you will need to edit, rewrite, and replot. My mentee will be ready for the challenge—and excited for it. Also, being in AMM will help you connect with other AMM mentees and create your own writing groups. Some of the best critique partners and writing friends I’ve met have been through AMM, and I’m hoping my mentee will be looking forward to meeting other writers as well!
If you can sweep me away like Nevermoor, send prickles up my spine like Frances Hardinge’s books, take me on an adventure like The Bartimaeus Trilogy, or write like Anna-Marie McLemore… I want your story.
Some recent books I loved include Amal Unbound and Mrs. Smith’s Spy School for Girls.
But if you’re not sure that your manuscript fits into my requests, that’s fine. This list isn’t all-encompassing. Surprise me!
