Maggie Soares graduated with a BA in Publishing Media from Oxford Brookes University before returning home to Toronto, where she lives, works as a content editor for a start-up, and writes books about difficult girls. She has two One Direction tattoos, and thinks that says pretty much all anyone needs to know.
I queried five manuscripts over six years, and signed with my agent after I was whipped into shape by AMM Round 2. My agent and I have done a ton of work on my manuscript since then, and my YA Contemporary is currently out on submission.
On top of my writing experience, I have heaps of industry experience. I have a BA in Publishing, and I’ve interned for magazines, indie and big-five publishers, and literary agents. As well as knowing about story construction, I know how to make ideas appealing to agents.
I had such a fantastic experience with AMM on the mentee side, I wanted to pay it forward! This is my second round of mentoring, and I’m so excited to find another great mentee.
I’m looking for a great writer who wants to take their book to the next level. If you’re confident in your writing ability, but aren’t sure about story structure or want someone to help you make adjustments before querying, I might be your gal!
- Magical Realism/Fabulism
- Own Voices
I love: funny, sweet love stories with hidden depths, ensemble casts, unusual timelines, angry girls, “guilty pleasure” reads, found families, and anything unapologetically teenage.
I don’t love: books with dead queer characters, cartoonish villainy/drama, misunderstanding-as-plot, suicide plots, “sick-lit.”
I WILL PROVIDE:
- Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
- Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)
- Skype or phone call
- Freestyle in chat
We’ll work together to figure out what kind of mentorship works best for you. I’ll provide an edit letter (which will be everything I love about your book as well as the changes I think we should work on), and then we’ll work on the book together until I think it’s ready for line edits. I’m happy to talk on the phone/Skype/text/carrier pigeon about anything, or to be a cheerleader. Once we’re ready, I’d also love to help with the query submission list, and anything else that could come up!
I’m looking for someone who isn’t afraid to really put their head down and work on what needs to get done, but won’t mind my bombarding them with gifs and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend music videos.
My number one: queer characters. Queer ensemble casts. Queer parents. Queer characters!!
Small towns: dingy house parties, hanging out in a suburban playground after dark, the secrets everyone knows about everyone else. If your book has the mood of a song by The Front Bottoms, PLEASE send it to me.
Unlikeable girls: I don’t mean “she can beat you up!” Unlikeable: send me your mean girls with broken hearts, your angry and frustrated, your ambitious-to-a-fault girls.
I’d love something a little dreamy or quiet, as long as we’re fully immersed in the MC’s head (or we have the potential to be!). Something like NOTHING LEFT TO BURN or WE ARE OKAY would be amazing.
Extra-curriculars: where are my band kids?? My theatre nerds??? My robotics champs???? I’d also love a part-time job workplace comedy.
DO NOT SEND ME:
Cancer/terminal illness books, Not Like Other Girls, characters who are mean/cruel just to advance the plot, plots that boil down to “racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic/etc. person learns to be Less Terrible,” extremely dark humor, suicide books.
Books: The Realm of Possibility by David Levithan, anything by Nina LaCour, Little and Lion by Brandy Colbert, I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson, You Don’t Know Me but I Know You by Rebecca Barrow, This is What if Feels Like by Rebecca Barrow (obvi.)
TV: Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Brooklyn 99, Broad City, The Good Place, Chewing Gum (I’d LOVE a YA Chewing Gum), literally ANY terrible low-budget true crime show
Movies: Corrina Corrina, Clueless, 21 and 22 Jump Street, Saved!, But I’m a Cheerleader!, 2016 Ghostbusters, The Rocky Horror Picture Show, Legally Blonde
Musicals: The Wild Party (the Andrew Lippa one), Next to Normal, Spring Awakening, Come From Away, Hedwig and the Angry Inch, It Shoulda Been You, Something Rotten
