A programmer by day, J.C. Davis lives in Dallas, Texas, with her husband, two kids, a pair of rowdy dogs, a pair of lazy cats, a hamster with a ridiculously long name, and two adorable hedgehogs who want to take over the world. In addition to writing, Ms. Davis is an amateur photographer, runs a Harry Potter meet-up group and embraces all things nerdy. She is represented by agent Mandy Hubbard with Emerald City Lit and Ms. Davis’s debut novel, CHEESUS WAS HERE, will be released by Sky Pony Press in April 2017.
2017 will be my third year as a Pitch Wars Middle Grade mentor. In addition, I’ve participated in multiple contests over the years as an entrant. I read extensively and have a good feel for both MG and YA books and what’s currently hitting shelves.
I love novels that drag me inside and don’t let me go. Voice will win me over every time. There’s very little I will say outright no to – except books dealing with molestation, animal cruelty, or which glorify racism. I’d love, love, love some own voices submissions.
I am very detailed and will provide an overall edit letter as well as inline notes. I ask a million questions to help refine plot, pacing, scene and character. I wield a red-pen of death and will use it liberally on your MS. Seriously, it might look like a blood bath when you get the Word doc back so the faint of heart need not apply. That said, I will squee and gush when I love something and cheer you on throughout the revision process.
My ideal mentee should be prepared to work your butt off if necessary to polish your novel. I wield a red pen of death and while I sprinkle in compliments when editing, I will also be blunt and leave a bajillion comments on your manuscript. I will work hard to improve your manuscript and I expect you to do the same. If you do not take criticism well or only want someone to rubber-stamp your novel and tell you it’s amazing, I am not the mentor for you. If you want someone who will push you to do your best and strengthen your novel, I’m the gal for you.
