I write for middle grade and teenage people because for them stories can be life changing – they were for me. My debut novel Lost Boys (Henry Holt for Young Readers) was released in 2017. I am a cofounder of the annual Better Books Workshop for middle grade and young adult writers. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area.
It took me many many years (like 14) of submitting and almosts to finally land my fabulous agent. She is a goddess and a mentor and sold my book pretty fast. We are “close” to getting the next book ready for submission!
I am in a critique group that has been together for ten years. None of us were published when we started and we all are now. I’ve mentored for AMM several times. In my day job I was a environmental planner where I did a lot of writing and editing.
I’ve had some great mentors along the way and enjoy giving back and meeting upcoming authors – plus dude, I like to read!!
I have a wide range of likes – middle grade and YA, fantasy, sci fi, contemporary and speculative fiction is great. Romance OK as well as long as there is more plot than just the kissing. Favorite reads of 2019 were UNDER THE EGG and SAL AND GABI BREAK THE UNIVERSE if that tells you anything.
- Magical Realism/Fabulism
- Urban/Contemporary Fantasy
If you have a wizard story it better be REALLY different – same goes for dragons as I’ve seen a lot of these. I love spunky, weird creative kids who don’t fit in.
I WILL PROVIDE:
- Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
- Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)
- Skype or phone call
I like to have a quick phone call to talk schedule and what the mentee is looking for. I will try to read in about a month and make edits as I go along and provide an overall letter. Within limits I am available for follow-up as the mentee goes back into revision as well.
Someone who is REALLY open to hearing it all – the good and the bad – its the only way to get better as a writer!
I’m pretty open.
DO NOT SEND ME:
Not probably looking for a 600 page epic. Just recently heard a few editors talking about how they really want concise complete stories and I would say these would draw me in too.
Already mentioned my fav reads of last year in my overview, watching MAGICIANS, DEEP SPACE NINE (again), EXPANSE, love anything by Gary Schmidt, A.S. King, Laura Ruby to name a few.
