Jennifer Honeybourn is a fan of British accents, Broadway musicals, and epic, happily-ever-after love stories. She is the author of four young adult novels, including THE-DO-OVER (coming July 2020). Her middle grade book, ESCAPE ROOM: THORN HOUSE (written under the pseudonym J.E. Hailstone) was released in October 2019 as a Barnes and Noble exclusive. Honeybourn lives in Stratford, Ontario with her husband, daughter and cats in a house filled with books.
I’ve always wanted to be a writer, but I was in my early 30s when I started to get serious about writing a book. I finished my first YA manuscript in 2010 and sent it around to agents. I got a few full requests and while ultimately I didn’t have any offers (which is a good thing because the book wasn’t very good), it gave me the confidence to keep writing. The third book I wrote ended up being my debut, WESLEY JAMES RUINED MY LIFE. It was published in 2017 by Swoon Reads. Swoon Reads is the publisher for my other three young adult books – WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU DEMONS, JUST MY LUCK and THE DO-OVER. I didn’t have an agent for my first two books. I am now with Hannah Fergesen at KT Literary; she’s my first and only agent and she’s wonderful. I also write under the pseudonym J.E. Hailstone for middle grade, and my first book, ESCAPE ROOM: THORN HOUSE, came out in October 2019.
I worked in communications and marketing for almost twenty years, so I have a pretty keen eye for editing. I’ve been in quite a few critique groups and I have many writer friends (published and unpublished) who I’ve read for over the years.
I remember what it was like to be at the beginning of my writing career. I like the idea of sharing my experience and helping another writer polish their manuscript. I think I can offer some solid advice about what to expect on their publishing journey.
I’m looking for a fun contemporary/paranormal/historical with a great voice. I gravitate to stories with humor and heart, adventure and twisty, face-paced plots.
- Urban/Contemporary Fantasy
I don’t think there are any tropes that I really dislike. The kids in our target audience haven’t necessarily seen all the tropes a million times, so I don’t think anything is off the table. I love paranormal and historical stories. I’m not super into sci-fi or fantasy, so if that’s your jam, I’m probably not the right mentor for you.
I WILL PROVIDE:
- Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
- Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)
- Skype or phone call
I’m a cheerleader. I like to see the best in a manuscript and help the author bring it to the next level. I’m not a harsh critic but I do believe that one of the traits that will serve you as an author is to develop a thick skin and to learn how to gracefully take criticism that will improve your book. I prefer to read the entire book rather than chapter by chapter, so I can give big picture notes.
My ideal mentee is looking to make their book the best it can be, someone who is willing to do the hard work. One of my favourite things about being a writer is the friendships I’ve made and I’m looking forward to building a relationship with my mentee and cheering them on their journey to publication.
