BIO
Lyndall Clipstone lives in Adelaide, South Australia. She writes about monsters and the girls who like to kiss them. A former youth librarian, she has a Bachelors in Creative Writing and a Graduate Diploma in Library and Information Management. She thinks Sarah should have stayed in the Labyrinth with the Goblin King and the Beast should never have turned back into a prince.

PUBLISHING BACKGROUND
LAKESEDGE was my first finished book. After being chosen for R4 of AMM, I rewrote and revised heavily with my mentor, Kim Smejkal. I had multiple offers in the September 2018 #PitMad, and found the perfect agent in Jill Grinberg. After several months of revision, we sent my book out into the world on submission in early 2019. LAKESEDGE sold at auction a few months later in a two book deal to Henry Holt/Macmillan.

EXPERIENCE
I was a mentor in R6 of AMM. I have an honors degree in English, and have CP’d with a number of authors during their pre-query/agent/editor revisions.

OVERVIEW
AMM was such an invaluable experience. I learned so much about writing craft and met so many wonderful friends. Being an author can be so stressful, daunting and lonely, and I’m glad to pay forward the support I received as a mentee.

Give me all your twisty, boundary-pushing books. I want messy, fierce characters who crave power, who make mistakes, who do terrible things. I want multilayered villains and morally grey protagonists. Romance and character-driven arcs are where I really shine, and a book with a complex romantic subplot will definitely grab my attention.

MENTORING GENRES

  • Fantasy
  • Sci-Fi
  • LGBTQIA
  • Horror
  • Gothic

Dark fantasy is my favourite. Horror in a fantasy/second world, not contemporary. Space-opera or character driven sci fi. I live for villain romance, enemies to lovers, and monster boyfriends. If your book leans towards crossover or upper YA then I’d love to see it.

I WILL PROVIDE:

  • Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
  • Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)
  • Skype or phone call
  • Freestyle in chat

WORKING STYLE
Generally, I’ll start with a big picture edit letter, then we can chat or skype as you go along. I won’t do line edits until the book is query ready. I’m also happy to help you put together a query package/agent list when the times comes.

IDEAL MENTEE
I will definitely cheer for all the things I love! But foremost I am here to help you figure out how to make your story better. I want someone who can be ruthless with their work. Who will kill darlings. Who is willing to work hard and do what it takes to make their book really shine.

SEND ME:
Anything that can be comped to the titles on my favourites list.

I’d love a world that feels like the Witcher or Dragon Age or Fire Emblem 3H. A book that feels like a symphonic metal album. Villain romances. Monsters. Monster boyfriends. Ruthless girls. Eldritch horror. Weird gods. Sex-positive romances with complex dynamics. Dark fantasy that isn’t too serious- let there be jokes! Sci Fi that has characters at the heart. Twisty, complex plots that keep me guessing. Clever, unique magic systems.

I am also complete Reylo trash and if your book can be at all comped to that, I’d love to see it.

DO NOT SEND ME:
If your book doesn’t have a romance, I will probably struggle to engage with it enough to offer insightful help. I’m not a huge fan of retellings unless it’s done in a really fresh way. Please don’t send me things vastly outside my preferred genres.
