BIO
Sajni Patel was born in vibrant India and raised in the heart of Texas, surrounded by a lot of delicious food and plenty of diversity. She draws on her personal experiences, cultural expectations, and southern flair to create worlds that center around strong Indian women. Once in MMA, she’s now all about puppies and rainbows and tortured love stories. She currently lives in Austin where she not-so-secretly watches Mathew McConaughey from afar during UT football games. Queso is her weakness and thanks to her family’s cooking, Indian/Tex-Mex cuisine is a real thing. She’s a die-hard Marvel Comics fan, a lover of chocolates from around the world, and is always wrapped up in a story.

PUBLISHING BACKGROUND
I’ve been in the publishing industry for nearly a decade. It’s been a long journey that started with many rejections based on “niche books” (AKA, brown characters), a couple of neglectful agents, and finally the best agent I could ask for who sold 3 projects within 9 months of signing. My debut, The Trouble with Hating You, is a rom-com that sold within 2 weeks in a 2-book deal, an releasing May 12, 2020. My YA contemporary, The Knockout, will debut in August, 2020 from Flux.

EXPERIENCE
I majored in Creative Writing at UW, worked as an editorial assistant at a small publishing house, and was an assistant editor/technical writer with a space-news publisher. I’m also wrapping up my second year mentoring with PitchWars, where my last mentee received 28 requests and an offer of rep within the first 24 hours and another offer a few days later. She is happily agented now.

OVERVIEWI’ve had such a difficult journey and I wished that I had a mentor take me in and guide me through it all. I have such a wealth of information that I want to share and help aspiring authors meet their goals in this tough industry.

I’m hoping to find a mentee who is willing to put in the work it takes to revise a project and get it in shape for agents and editors. Someone who is open to constructive feedback and guidance, who is professional and kind, is a hard worker who communicates well, and above all is appreciative.

MENTORING GENRES

YA & Adult:

  • Contemporary
  • Romance
  • Fantasy
  • Sci-Fi
  • #ownvoices
  • Horror

I’m a big fan of romance or romantic elements, fanciful worlds as well as contemporary. I’m not the biggest fan of paranormal.

I WILL PROVIDE:

  • Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
  • Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)

WORKING STYLE
I’d like to discuss potential visions to make sure that we have a similar style for the project, then send an editorial letter to cover the bigger pictures. Later on, I tend to do line edits as needed. I’m very fast and would like a mentee who is reasonably fast as well. I would also like my mentee to respond to all emails in a timely manner. I don’t sugar coat a lot, I get down to business because we have a lot of work to do.

IDEAL MENTEE
Fast, considerate, professional, open to brain-storming, mature, communicative, friendly, and preferably has a sense of humor.
