BIO
Kat Cho used to hide books under the bathroom sink and then sneak in there to read after bedtime. Her parents pretended not to know. This helped when she decided to write a dinosaur time-travel novel at the tender age of nine. Sadly, that book was not published. Currently, Kat writes YA sci-fi and fantasy and is represented by Beth Phelan at the Bent Agency.
EXPERIENCE
I’ve been actively involved in contests such as WCNV (reading entries) and DVPit (providing Pitch critiques). I’ve been actively critiquing for four years and am happy to say many of my critique partners are now agented (one has a book coming out in 2017!)

OVERVIEW
I really want to read something sweeping and passionate. Not really that it needs to be full-on romance, I just want the relationships to be vivid (this can be love connections OR friendships and family). When I feel for a character they can take me anywhere and I’ll willingly follow. So if you have a very vivid cast then I’m happy to read. I also really love deep world-building where parts of the world almost seem alive. I don’t want the characters to just live in a place but to interact with it.
I am probably the best at reacting to character, but I do think I am good at picking at plot because I love Sci-Fi so much and I have a science background. I will notice a plot hole and point it out. I will ask why something works a certain way. I’ll tell you if something seems too coincidental or like a cheat. I will give a lot of notes and they might ramble, but my purpose is to let you know why I think this way as a reader and why it threw me off within the story. I am hoping for a mentee who can process my long notes and can feel comfortable coming to me if they are confused or need clarification. I know that the story is yours and will always be yours, so if my notes don’t fit that’s fine.

YA SF (space opera and anything involving androids/robots are my jam. If it’s the YA version of Firefly I’ll love it), YA Fantasy (ALL FANTASY, I love Laini Taylor, Holly Black, Sarah Rees Brennan, Alexandra Bracken, Marissa Meyer, Jennifer Armentrout)
MENTORING STYLE
I am fairly flexible. In general, I can give my notes in blocks (first half and second half) because then the mentee will get to utilize my notes for the first half while I work on the second half and it’s less waiting (waiting is the bane of my existence!!). If we end up doing more than one round of revisions, I want it to be a conversation. I can Skype if that helps with explaining my more complicated notes. In general, my notes are never hard and fast, they’re always suggestions and if they don’t fit your vision it would be good to know why so I’m not still trying to get you to go in a direction that doesn’t fit the story.
I also love GIFs and emojis so I send a lot. Additionally, I like knowing about the story (what inspired it, pinterest boards, musical inspiration). And if you share nerd interests with me then we’ll get along fine (Kdramas/Kpop, Anime, Talking about food randomly, Sci-fi movies and TV shows, and just all pop culture in general hahaha)

IDEAL MENTEE
Someone who likes to brainstorm and likes to discuss their process. Someone who is as big of a nerd as me, so will be okay with my constant tangents. Also, if you love Gundam Wing, Dragon Ball Z, Miyazaki, Kdramas, Psych, Happy Endings, or Animorphs then we’ll probably be a good match.

FAVES
“Oh, I already said these in my other answers, but I’ll just say them again:
Animorphs, Gundam Wing, Miyazaki films, Baz Luhrmann Films (but specifically Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge), KDramas, Psych, Happy Endings, Laini Taylor, Alexandra Bracken, Holly Black, Sarah Rees Brennan, Jennifer Armentrout, Harry Potter (obvi who doesn’t love these?), The Time Traveller’s Wife (probably a book I’ve read too many times), Nora Roberts (ADORE HER BOOKS), Renee Ahdieh, Musicals (Les Miserables, Hamilton)”

Non-Western worlds and mythology, Diversity!, I’m a sucker for retellings when done well and not too stuck in the source material
