Rachel Brooks

YA contemporary horror & historical dark fantasy

In Revision

Judy Lin was born in Taiwan and moved to Canada when she was eight years old. She grew up with her nose in a book and loved to escape to imaginary worlds. She now divides her time between working as an occupational therapist and creating imaginary worlds of her own. She loves board games, wuxia movies, and tea lattes.

I was a Pitch Wars mentee and worked with two amazing mentors. That experience made me grow so much as a writer. I learn a lot from reading and critiquing other people’s manuscripts. I also love to talk about writing in general.

I’m looking for authenticity. Someone who can make me laugh with their characters or cry for their struggles or experience the setting like I’m actually there. I would love to work with an #ownvoices writer.

I would love a contemporary story where platonic friendships are just as important as the romantic ones (I would prefer romance as subplot if it’s there at all). I also love stories about family, about being part of different cultures, and I particularly enjoy stories about sisterhood. I love psychological horror and/or thrillers. Scare me!

I’m interested in contemporary fantasy (bonus if it’s dark or has a horror element) as well about unique non-western mythologies / magic systems. Real world only though please. No epic or portal fantasies to another world.

For both my contemporary / fantasy wishlists I would love a different setting. Take me to Iceland or Malaysia or Ecuador.

I’m strongest with developmental edits. I will read the full manuscript and examine the character arcs and the story structure. We will chat about pacing, worldbuilding, ramping up the emotional highs and lows. After the first revision we will work on tightening the manuscript further, however you want to approach it.

If you need me I am available for brainstorming, questions, general chats about writing via e-mail, skype or gchat.

Someone who is committed to working hard on their manuscript. Someone willing to put time and effort into the revision process. Someone who works well with deadlines (not set in stone, but general time frames).
