BIO
Originally from Ithaca, NY, Adrianne Finlay now lives in Cedar Falls, Iowa with her husband, the poet J. D. Schraffenberger, and their two young daughters. She received her PhD in literature and creative writing from Binghamton University, and is an associate professor of English at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.
PUBLISHING BACKGROUND
I wrote my first book in 2013, and with that book I signed with my agent fairly quickly. That book was never picked up, but while on submission I wrote another book in 2015. That book is now my debut novel with HMH.
EXPERIENCE
I’m an Associate Professor of English and the Program Director of Creative Writing at Upper Iowa University in Fayette, Iowa.
OVERVIEW
Smart, interesting science fiction, more character driven than tech-driven. Great world-building. Anything world-ending/futuristic/dystopian is great, and a good dose of romance doesn’t hurt.
Now that my debut book is coming out, I love the idea of reading the work of up-and-coming writers and being of assistance in any way I can on this whole crazy process.
- Sci-Fi
- Horror
I love science fiction, especially science fiction that incorporates romance.
I WILL PROVIDE:
- Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
- Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)
- Skype or phone call
- Freestyle in chat
WORKING STYLE
I’m happy to work in any way that seems best for a mentee. It’s important to be comfortable in a method of communication, and some people are more comfortable with conversations, whereas others with text, like email or messaging. Whatever works for you!
IDEAL MENTEE
Anyone interested in talking about craft and working to make their story as awesome as it can be!
SEND ME:
I love science fiction! And stories with romance! Stories in space are great, but I also like sci fi that is futuristic, speculative, or dystopian. I included horror and like all kinds of horror, but mostly apocalyptic horror/zombies/plagues etc. I love strong main characters. That doesn’t have to mean physically strong/tough, just characters who feel alive, who interact within complex dynamics, and who drive the plot in interesting ways. I also like smart science fiction that uses narrative to interrogate the larger questions of the world/humanity/identity.
DO NOT SEND ME:
Contemporary
FAVES
Westworld, Lost, The Wire, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead (anything zombie related), reality shows like Top Chef, The Bachelor. In books, I love The Diabolic, The Giver, Station Eleven, Zone One, The Passage
