BIO
Sandra Proudman is a Mexican American writer of stories with unabashed Latinx protagonists. She grew up in California where she studied journalism and creative writing. Along with being an AMM mentor, she is a Pitch Wars and DiverseVoices, Inc. mentor, was a Marketing and Publicity Intern at Latinx in Publishing, and is part of the #LatinxPitch team, a yearly Twitter pitch event geared toward connecting emerging Latinx voices with agents and editors. In her free time, she enjoys helping marginalized creators with their submission materials and mentoring writers of color. With a background in all things marketing and graphic design, she is currently the marketing and project manager for a top, multi-million-dollar real estate group in the nation.

PUBLISHING BACKGROUND
I wrote four manuscripts before landing my agent with a major R&R. I’ve done many revisions throughout my agented time, and love revising/have gotten SO much better at it. I have shelved my first manuscript out on submission and currently have three manuscripts out on sub — a MG, a YA, and an anthology proposal. I have lots of experience mentoring and have found that mentoring has been a way to give back to the community and help writers of color find agents much sooner than I was able to!

EXPERIENCE
I have varied experience from mentoring to watching mentees and writing friends alike sign with agents and get their work published. I also specialize in query writing.

OVERVIEW
I love mentoring! I’ve always wanted to apply for AMM, but seem to always miss the deadline. I’m happy to have caught it this year! I have been a Pitch Wars mentor for three years now and have also been a DV Mentor. My Pitch Wars mentees have always landed at an agency soon after their mentorship. My DV Mentor is currently in the querying trenches but I am so excited about her manuscript, which is phenomenal! I also just love being a sounding board for writers outside of mentorship programs, have offered critiques continuously, and overall just like helping writers through this very tough industry if I can.

I am looking to work with a BIPOC writer. I am open to any genre and any type of story, as long as it features a BIPOC protagonist as the hero of their story. I am Latinx, so of course, Latinx stories hold a very special place in my heart. I would love to see Afro-Latinx submissions, especially.

MENTORING GENRES
Middle Grade, Accepts Graphic Novels

  • Contemporary
  • Romance
  • Fantasy
  • Sci-Fi
  • Mystery/Thriller
  • Historical
  • Magical Realism/Fabulism
  • Urban/Contemporary Fantasy
  • Horror

I mean, I love everything. I LOVE ALL THE TROPES. I am especially drawn to love triangles a la Peeta vs. Gale.

I WILL PROVIDE:

  • Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
  • Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)
  • Skype or phone call
  • Freestyle in chat

WORKING STYLE
However you learn best and would like to receive feedback, we’ll go that route! I am really flexible and enjoy working with mentees at their speed. We’ll chat more about what works for you and what doesn’t when we connect, just know that I’m not “my way or the highway” and will work with you.

IDEAL MENTEE
My ideal mentee is someone who really, really wants to learn and doesn’t take notes personally. If you are not the type of writer who likes critique or would be open to major rewrites, I am probably not the best mentee for you.

SEND ME:
I want stories that feature BIPOC protagonists being heroes told by BIPOC writers. I am open to really anything for AMM! I DO specialize in contemporary fantasy and science fiction, but I love it all. Please consider me!

DO NOT SEND ME:
I am not the best for any stories that involve sexual assault of any kind. I am open to gore and basically all else, but please if your story has sexual assault my heart simply can’t take it.
