PUBLISHING BACKGROUND
We’re lifelong critique partners, since neither of us has known a day without the other. In fact, our first novel was one we co-wrote together. Eventually, we branched off to write independently, but it was the second book we co-authored that led us to sign with our amazing agent last summer!

The novel we signed with received over fifty full manuscript requests, which resulted in seven offers of literary representation.

Since signing with our agent, we’ve written several novels and are currently working on exciting projects we can’t wait to share!

EXPERIENCE
Together, we are currently Pitch Wars 2021 Mentors. Over the years, we have participated in critique groups and have had critique partners. The writer’s we’ve worked with have gone on to obtain literary agents, six-figure book deals, as well as, film rights sold. Because of our experience, we are confident that we will be a positive addition to our mentee.

OVERVIEW

As writers, we know how it feels to be a mentee, because we’ve been there. Both of us were Author Mentor Match mentees. Being mentored in the program helped us learn tools to hone our craft.

In our careers, we’ve had the privilege of being mentored by New York Time’s best-selling authors; their guidance has been instrumental in our success as authors.

We can’t wait to pass on all that we’ve learned to our future mentee.

We want to take this time to congratulate you for having a book ready to submit for Author Mentor Match! Someone once told us, celebrate EVERY win. So, right now, this is us telling you to do the same. Celebrate this moment. Completing a book is NOT easy. It takes courage, bravery, strength, and determination. You should be very proud of yourself for making it this far.

If you think your story would be a great fit for us, we’d love to see it!

We have an eclectic taste in YA and are open to ALL genres; whether your book is an edge-of-your-seat Thriller, heart-pounding Horror, swoonworthy Romance, grounded Contemporary, mind-bending Sci-Fi, or a Fantasy that transports us to another world! We are well-read in each of these genres and can’t wait to dive into your words!

We also would love to see books by writers who are BIPOC, disabled, LGBTQIA+, or from marginalized backgrounds.

We’re open to all books in our genres and would LOVE to find a book we didn’t know we wanted.

Or, a heartbroken main character that gives you all the FEELS. Or, even a combination of the three. We are longing to see Black Love, Queer Love, Interracial Love, etc. Give us something we haven’t seen before!

WE WILL PROVIDE:

  • Edit Letter (Big Picture developmental feedback)
  • Line edit (dropping notes into a Word Document)

  • Freestyle in chat

WORKING STYLE
We plan to be accommodating mentors. Having had experience editing other writer’s works, as well as co-writing, we’ve learned communication is the most important part of a successful collaboration. We are willing to collaborate with our mentee to decide what communication style works best for us all. That is the approach we will have throughout the process.

First Edit: Big Picture

Once we select you as our mentee, we will send you an edit letter, detailing all of the ideas we have for revisions, including our original thoughts about your story (Including why we fell in love with it!). These will be developmental, big picture edits. We’d love to get on a call to go over any questions you have about the revisions; before you head into the first big edit.

Second Edit: Line Edit

After you complete the big picture edits, we will then read the manuscript again. This time, we will complete line/copy edits, with in-line notes. We both have a film and screenwriting background, both having experience as working actors and recent graduates of UCLA. We know how to make dialogue sing! We will work tirelessly to ensure your manuscript comes out flawless.

After which, you’ll do a final read-through to ensure you are satisfied with the revisions. As for your submission package, we will help you draft/strengthen your query letter, synopsis, pitch, and samples.

IDEAL MENTEE
Our ideal mentee should be transparent, understanding, and have good communication with us. We expect our mentee to understand that Author Mentor Match is a lot of work. It may seem daunting, but we will be there to ensure our mentee succeeds. We want to build a lasting mentorship to help make our mentee’s book stronger. During our collaboration, we hope to walk away with not only a mentee, but a friend.

SEND US:

Contemporary: We have a soft spot for Contemporary! Swoonworthy reads or high concept books. We love novels-in-verse that give you ALL the feels. Our taste in Contemporary is varied, and we liken it to the saying, “We’ll know it, when we see it.” While that saying may be a vague one, we’re telling you, if you have an amazing Contemporary, trust us, WE WANT TO SEE IT!

Fantasy: We both LOVE Fantasy! Give us ALL of your lush worlds, steeped in rich culture. Transport us with your words and make us fall in love with a DYNAMIC voice. We want a main character worth rooting for. But not necessarily one without flaws. As for magic systems, the more unique and easy to understand/explain, the better. As for villains, we like our baddies drawn to the dark side, but we prefer for their motivations to be defined, so the audience can understand, not necessarily agree with. And, finally, enemies-to-lovers is a trope we’ve been craving to read more of.

Sci-Fi: Whether your Sci-Fi is Romantic, soft Sci-Fi, or hard Sci-Fi, we want to see it. We want to be thrown into high-stakes worlds, whether futuristic, or dystopian. GIVE IT ALL TO US. We also are interested in more grounded Sci-Fi. Where the voice and characters stand out. Above all else, we love commercial and high-concept stories, with a plot that is both unique, but not overly complicated to understand.

Horror: In Horror, we’re looking for thrills and spine-tingling chills. We love spooky season! Give us all the cool fall nights, pumpkin spice, pumpkin patches, creepy crawlers, haunted mansions, and scary ghost stories. No fright is too big to unsettle our nerves. Make our hearts race with your stories.

Thriller: In Thrillers, we love a strong voice, hook, and excellent pacing. We like our thrillers to be gripping and heart-racing. We love all sub-genres of thrillers, whether it’s a revenge story, good girl gone bad—with relatable motivations, or even a high octane story. Please give us all of your teen amateur detective stories, full of hijinks. For suspense, we love stories that keep us guessing, big bombshell reveals, and hidden family secrets. We want thrillers that keep us guessing until the last page.

DO NOT SEND US:

  • We’re not the best mentors for books with hate speech about race, religion, sexuality, etc.
  • On the page abuse, grotesque violence, gore, sexual violence, and Black pain.
